Winona’s birthday party – Form & Concept Gallery

Winona LaDuke’s 58th birthday happened to fall on the night of the New Mexico Premiere! So there were two parties for her Santa Fe visit!

Two exhibits filled the Form & Concept Gallery. One exhibit, The Art of Indigenous Resistance, was curated by Kim Smith, Honor the Earth Board member and artist. The other exhibit, Broken Boxes, was curated by Ginger Dunnill and Cannupa Hanska Luger. Both shows featured Indigenous Artists putting their native world-view into their art.

The gallery was packed as Ginger introduced Kim and Kim introduced Winona. I was able to speak briefly on my history with Indian Country, why I was inspired by Winona LaDuke and the current state of Line 3 pipeline in Minnesota.

I bought cupcakes for Winona’s birthday and everyone sang the “Happy Birthday” song to her. Following the Form & Concept show we walked to the ZOHI Gallery for the Red Nation Film Festival screening.
